The Heritage Collection

Jack took a trip to London today and popped into No.1 Saville Row, Gieves and Hawkes and asked to see my framed work commissioned to me last year. They are so lovely there that they let him peek up the private staircase and take a photo. I realised I never posted the photo's they sent me so here they are and the one Jack emailed me.

OOH! Prince lovely teeth would have seen his when he went to get fitted for his wedding suit! Hope he thought I did a good job.

Well it's been rather busy in the workshop for the last few weeks, our final year undergraduates working hard for their assesment and the all important exhibition on 17th June. We've reached the last two days of printing and I couldn't be happier, it's been a tough slog but the students are producing some great work. Bring on Friday!

Whilst our workshop gets a huge refurbishment during the summer I shall be back in my studio full time, it's my annual summer job! I've had lots of time to deliberate over my work of late, what I'm doing next, which direction to go and i've got some exciting things to be working on... more of that to come.

For now a little update on the success of one of my most popular prints, it's so very close to completely selling out which is fantastic! I have about 25 prints of 'Smoke and Suspenders' available to buy (through me or NewBloodArt) so this means there are 75 people with my artwork in their homes, wow!

Waiting for the weekend

Oh! the weekend could not come soon enough, this week has draaaaagged on. I love my job, I love the students but just go home for Easter already! I want my three weeks off, I have big plans.

It hasn't helped that I've dragged my body around for the first part of the week with severe all over body ache after a 20km walk at the weekend, just for fun might I add. I've had to post pictures to just prove to myself that I actually did it and look, i'm smiling! I look like a 6ft 11yr old girl too.

Bring on the weekend I say. I'm going to plan out my Easter break as I have a lot I want to do. I'm working on some wedding invites for a friends wedding which is fun, I have a painting to finish to add to my LUXE collection and I'd like to start drawing for a new collection of paintings.

My tablecloth designs are coming along nicely too. I found a screen I'd used last summer with a cute vase print on so I'm going to jig that around to make a new print. I've also got new tree design and a bird print. Just got to buy my fabric and find a seamstress to hem my edges. Then my tablecloths will be ready to go on sale! It's very exciting. You'll all want one I'm sure. Posting pictures soon!

Christmas time for my loved ones often means handmade, they love it which is a brilliant bonus to my money saving - painstakingly executed - gift extravaganza.

This year I made hampers with homemade chutneys and jams, cookies, flapjack and two types of fudge. Aswell as that there were two tea towels with our faces on that I screen printed - a big hit, then it was all packed inside a hand printed cotton canvas bag. I printed on everything else I could get my hands on, t-shirts for the children with their favourite characters on, tee's with bow ties on for my sweetest friends four boys, a tee for my brother and my boy and a cushion for my sister. I every spare moment I found I screen printing onto something!

My bestest bit is still to come. I printed two tablecloths for our parents with a printed tree and bird repeat on (a photo in situ is on an older post.) I love printing repeats, there is a real sense of accomplishment when you see a repeat pattern printed on 3metres of fabric. So I have decided that printed table cloths is what this world is missing - which is is, you can't buy a nice one anywhere. Well you can soon! Watch this space.

These are the pieces I was working on before Christmas. I've was a bit wrapped up with Christmas (no pun intended) and printing for my Christmas hampers that I forgot to post pictures of them - in fact, I forgot to take proper shots of them for the website too. They're inspired by a collection of paintings I started in 2007 called xxlady, there was a slight mix up on NB and I had to recreate two paintings that I had previously sold. They aren't exactly the same but have the same feel, the top grey lady wasn't quite finished when I took the photo, maybe one day the lovely customer will send me a picture of it in their home instead. Oh I'd love that!

I'm so busy at them minute AND I AM NOT COMPLAINING. I'm working on a commission for NewBloodArt that is a recreation of some work I sold previously. I'm happy about this, i'm pleased people still like my older work and it doesn't take as long to paint them when the idea has already born from my brain. As well as that i'm hoping to get a few bits finished and online before the end of the year to sell - hate having these unfinished pieces lying around. I'm going to spend a week on them, get them in the print room and put a load of GOLD all over - been meaning to do it for ages and I can't wait. Think its going to add a new dimension to my work.

A new website is now in the process of production too - very early stages of production. Started it last night with Joe boy who is showing me how to upload my design onto dreamweaver, learning as well as creating. Computer club.

Next week i'm doing a specialist workshop for our students about printing onto wood, plastics and veneer, something I do a bit of so I'm spreading my wealth of knowledge (approx worth about £7.99) so I have a handout and a workshop to create, this is new territory for me as although i'm very involved with the workshops I only 'teach' a small amount. This will be all me and my experience so its exciting. A shame you all can't come because it'll be SOOOOOOO interesting. Hopefully more people will show up than the one we did this morning, a massive 2 persons present, hence why I've found time to do 2 posts in one day!

When my cool hunter newsletter arrives in my mailbox, it stays there unread waiting for me, for days and weeks. This is unheard of in my world of emails, I am a self confessed email cleanser. There is never enough time to read it all, scanning it isn't an option there are too much to look at, grabbing my attention, much like a trip to TK Maxx.

Not today though, I opened the newsletter it it arrived at 9.16am, this is amazing, I can get this read, the 'nuff' cool stuff processed and be a 'cool' person by 1 o'clock!

The first image that pops out at me is so completely stunning I have found myself in a trance. I'm so loving this work by Marion Bolognesi.

She has an amazing website and blog too, follow it here. I've found 100 new things to adore and admire. Its simply bold, I can see parallels with what I wanted to do in previous and future work. Feeling very inspired to get my paint brushes out.

I've been working on them drawings for the tailors and it's been a busy few weeks. Slightly stressful but fun too. They are all finished now, these are a few test pieces (or ones that went wrong) and the final ones are with the tailors and they love them. Just got to draw a picture of myself now to go with them. It's been a great project to work on and I have to thank Dan, Alex for their help and of course RahRah without her face and the drawing of it, I wouldn't have been recommended for the job!

There are 16 altogether, that will be hung on a stairwell up to a private dressing room at Gieves and Hawkes. The lucky people to be drawn by me were Charlie Chaplin, Noel Coward, Ian Fleming, Sean Connery, Scott of the Antarctic, Wellington, Nelson, Prince Albert, David Beckham, Robbie Williams, Princess Diana, Prince William, Michael Caine, Micahel Jackson, Churchill and David Cameron.

Well, I have had the most fantastic fabulous day. I'm doing a project for a rather amazing and well known tailors in London, some illustration work of their various famous clients. A quick trip down from Nottingham to Savile Row where I chatted with a lovely chap there, had a tour around the shop, the workshop, the archive room and the private dressing room, it was all very very exciting and inspiring and totally different to any other Tuesday lunchtime.

I have a lot of work to be getting on with and quite a short deadline so my next few weeks will be consumed with Robbie Williams chin and the 1st Duke of Wellington's nose!

Whilst I was there I saw my bestest Scarborough friend Laow, we had a power lunch date as I had to skip back over to St Pan for the last off peak train (full of the most irritating people - what is wrong with the good British folk and their train etiquette!)

Then I log in for the first time today to find i've sold some work (yeah!) and my friend Joe has started a blog all about his work, check it out here please!

I'm quite lucky to work where I do. Not only do I get the whole summer off to do my own thing but I also get to mix with some amazing young and talented people. It's always great to see what previous students are getting up to after graduating so I was chuffed when I bumped into Emma the other day in town. After a brief chat I told her to apply for the AA2A scheme that goes on at Loughborough Uni - not really knowing much about it really myself but I know the successful applicants get access to our workshop and people who I know who've done it in various other institutions have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

So she applied and she got in! Yeah! In fact, she's here now making screens and telling me all about the other girls are up to. I thought I would feature a few of them on my blog, there's some really exciting stuff. This is Emma's work, she's producing glassware splashbacks and work top savers.

Ellen Calvert has recently moved back to good old Blighty after 2 years at Abercrombie and Fitch. Her work combines print and stitch on top of heavyily knitted fabrics. I will have a floor cushion please.

Then there's Zoe and her super sweet collection dedicated to her love of her home town - Margate. It just makes me want to go there and eat fish and chips by the sea.

Wow, it's amazing how time flies between each post. What to report to my blog about R.Hill's latest accomplishments?

Working on a wedding present for Rachel so once that's done it'll be blog worthy 1million %. There's wood and there's printing, a handsome combo.

I HAD neglected my painting duties for too long and returned to the studio for a few hours last night - the face I am working on has approx. 15 layers of the same face underneath it but I think I made some progress last night. I'm sure the peeps at new blood art must think I am the biggest slacker ever (because it is true) and are sick of hearing "i'll be sending you something soon" It's so hard to find the energy to love a painting, to want to channel that energy into its completion, when it just feels not quite right. Enough moaning though, I'm getting there and once I have enough free time I am going to slap a load of gold foil over it because it's part of my new(ish) LUXE collection.

I've started another blog about the in's and out's of the print room where I work. Unfortunately for you dear readers it's only accessible if you have a lboro uni log in. I can assure you any amazing finds will reach the dizzy heights of this blog for my 17 followers to ponder over.

I've been designing a set of labels for my cousin's range of jam and chutney's, flexing my photoshop skills, stretching myself to the limit. My brain is confused with all the shortcut keys I seem to have picked up in the process. Still, god loves a tryer.

Cockstock 2010 takes place this weekend, a one day festival that our friends put on in London. It started as a house party for friends and is now housed in a proper (ever changing) venue with a proper bar and other people than my own friends.
COME ALONG!!!!! It'll be excellent as ever, this year's theme is 'Industrial Revolution' - do with that what you will, is generally the tag line to the theme, the more off centre the better. Info here photo's here.
And I haven't a clue what to go as. uuuhhh.... got to look for my oyster card too. TOO MUCH TO DO TOO LITTLE TIME!
Here's last year's outfits when I had the advantage of using a fully operating print room and supplies, don't have this facility this year (selfish asbestos). The theme was 'Lust for Loot', I'm the fruit machine, Jack the wanted poster. (I've pointed that out like the beard wouldn't give it away.)

Another lonely saturday afternoon....

... I could have gone to Bestival. But when I reached that fork in the road that said 'fantasy banter' or 'bank balance' I chose the sensible route and sold my ticket. I know this was the right thing to do but I can't help feeling like i'm missing out, espesh since I have spent the day fighting boredom in lonely town. Jack has gone fishing (he sold his festival ticket too, we're a match made in sensible heaven) and I have been finding things to do all day.

Of course, the things I've really needed to do, I have given a wide birth and found other, completely necessary things to pass the time. Planted the winter pansey's, researched trends for a fabric collection, watched as much 'catch up' tv as possible. Merely dipping my toe into my world of creativity without actually taking a big plunge - or opening the attic hatch towards the studio - with the thought firmly in my mind "i'll go up there later....after lunch....after tea..."

As I write this I find I am totally distracted by the programme I have been waiting for all day, Strictly come dancing (actually, I'm glad I am on my own) so it seems that creation on paper will have to wait until tomorrow. It has been a good day, who needs music and festival's? I've got mud in my finger nails.

Instead I will sit back on my red sofa with wide open eye's, chuckling at anything that come's out of Brucie's mouth and contemplate putting the heating on.

Rah Rah's Hen Collection

I had the privileged of organising rah rah's hen celebration which went stupendously well last weekend. I had the best time I have had in ages, all dolled up in 1950's dress complete with wicked hair by Lucille Needles, a friend and a living, breathing 50's siren.

the summer months

Working term time only at Loughborough mean's I get to entertain myself over the summer months. The days merge into weekends and by week 6, I don't know what month it is never mind what day. Without the summer weather to distract me (thanks weather people for arranging the entire dull summer) I have found my time off to be very productive - perhaps not always in the way I might have anticipated back in June.

So what did I actually achieve from the list posted back in June?

*holiday of a lifetime with my loved ones It happened, the best time ever and still rocking a golden ish glow
*develope LUXE, a new collection of paintings and maybe more YEAH, this is happening, I'm on painting number two and waiting for our printroom to open again to develop more.
*sort out the studio DONE
*become more bookish 3 Books on holiday ZILCH back home
*turn the house into textiletown aka beautville So totally did!
*gym everyday and be super healthy Let's say 70% true, I've been on a Boost bar over drive since last weekend.
*for fill my duty as a bridesmaid and help plan a hen-do celebration like no other for my bestie A hen do to over shadow all hen do's even if I do say so myself. Picture's to come later (sans the origami penis stuck to a drawn picture of the groom. I use my talents where I can)
*not spend the first hours of the day watching homes under the hammer but switched to Gilmore Girls and everything else after this on E4
*bestival! Best-not to if you want to remain financially stable- ival BUT I did get to stand at the side of the stage to watch my friends band TSU play at Leeds festival - AMAZING.
*tax return. boring. Did it, BAM!

Off the list, I went horse riding, Lego Land, Wicksteed park, Summer sundae, went bridesmaid dress fabric shopping and got my friend a signed photograph of George Lamb.

two things you should know

1. I've been horse riding today, which is a new thing for me. Jo has got me into it. I learnt how to rise and trot and attempted a canter, it was big news on the banks of the river Trent. Everyone was raving about it apparently.

Well, they took me the best part of 2 days to 'rustle up' so I am relieved that I am happy with my cushions - I MADE THEM! And a table cloth. This is a good feeling, they have not only brightened up our living space but they made me enjoy printing for fabric again. It's very different to how I normally channel my creative efforts, I always put too much thought into a simple idea. It all came rushing back to me in a swoop of a squeegee.

I can grow things! Thank you Wilko for your excellent seeds that have grown into life and tasty things. I like this new side of me. I feel a real sense of accomplishment. There's a few people I need to thank here for their words and guidance. God, of course, goes without saying, Dad, you're wise and your free pots and allotment compost have really set me on course, without you, I wouldn't be here. Russ, you know without you, I wouldn't have tomatoes and finally, Jack, your sporadic watering I'm sure has helped along the way.

Week 1 + 2 of the summer hiatus: location Antigua. Absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. Just, amazing. Family, food, hot hot heat.
Week 3: jet lag naps, washing the contents of 2 suitcases, making wedding presents for our friends and covering myself with Dove to maintain this summer glow my body hasn't seen for a while.

Whilst in Sleaford at the weekend, Jack's Dad asked if we wanted to go to the hub, "to see some women's knickers?" so naturally, I was intrigued. Why are the women folk of Sleaford showing us their grundies? So we take a stroll over there to find its actually a brilliant touring exhibition about the history of underwear, particularly corsets, bra's and other wears to shape and control the female form. (not the knicker drawers of the local people).

There were some really interesting bits, I didn't know I could buy a bra that seeps out aloe vera to make my....area's softer! HOW did women wear corsets that are even too small to get round my thigh let alone waist?! Beautiful styling throughout the show - I wish I'd taken my camera. Now the JPG piece Madonna famously wore wasn't there but there were a few similar girdles and pointy bustiers that were amusing - Thank goodness times have changed!!

... I've neglected my blog, one day becomes a week, a week flys by and a month passes with no posts. Bad blogger. what's been going on.... well, the degree show looms ever closer for our 3rd year textiles students (excellent for me, only 5 weeks until my summer hiatus) so I'm up to the eye balls in print paste, I cannot remember the last time I saw my hands without a thick covering of (usually purple) dye. I do love every minute of it though! Especially seeing their chuffed faces when the printings over and there, on the table, is THEIR work, and it looks AMAZING. I've photographed Jodie Philo's repeated length, it's wicked and she should be very proud of herself.

... I've had the chance to finish the last 10 hand finished print's of 'the face' so i'm pleased as punch.

Each of the first 15 prints are individual, some with collage, screen printing and painting or a mixture of all three. They will be available to buy from www.art-el.co.uk any day now priced £75.

Right what's next on my list of things to create?

My lovely friend Ruth @ the miniature knit shop will be exhibiting at this year's SOCK craft fair in Loughborough this weekend. She makes the most wonderful handknitted outfit's for babies like this cowboy costume with matching hat, guns and sherriff's badge, it's possibly the cutest thing in the world. If you are Loughborough way this weekend, (why wouldn't you be?!) pass by and say hello.

Sock will run for two days this year, from Saturday 27th March to Sunday 28th March, at Loughborough Town Hall

If only I remembered to take the camera lead with me when I take photo's I might have more posts on here.

I've found myself quite busy of late, trying to get print's and paintings finished and started, for art-el and newbloodart, another online gallery I'm a part of. It's been hard trying to squeeze everything in amongst my general lack of motivation! I have been doing some burlesque insirped drawings for someone else, including picture's of Etta James, Billie Holiday and Smokey Robinson, which was odd as I can't remember the last time I drew a picture of a man (thinking back, I reckon it was a picture of Kevin Costner for my Mum. A tasteful pencil drawing aged 12yrs).

So, there's Smokey, I think I like. They asked for Otis Redding too but I just couldn't get my head around painting a moustache......

It's been quiet in the print room of late, so Zara (another technician) and I have taken the opportunity to do some of our own work with a mission in mind - If we teach it, we should be doing it ourselves. 'It' being a repeated length of fabric, I haven't done one of these since 2004 when I was still a student, so it seemed about-time!
Here's the finished result, it's such a satisfying thing to complete. It's great that I've found a use for the length too, it will be turned into bunting and napkins for my friend Rachel's wedding in October.

New prints

Just before Christmas, I got a new set of limited edition prints made up called 'The Face'. I've finally found time to start hand finishing the first 15 prints. I spent the afternoon testing the print on the paper, I was worried about bleeding and the paper buckling. So far, so good. Once I've mixed up the right colours, I'll get the 15 print's done in no time.

I'm trying to link the print in with the other painting's I've done in my 'light study' collection, some print's will have collage on too. These are just test's but I already love this one.

The wonders of modern technology

I think this is very cool, its a 360 degrees photo tour of the print room that I work in at Loughborough Uni. Everyone looks hard at work, including myself! I'm a textiles technician and the student's in the tour are our current 3rd year student's.

Jack and I are back at the drawing board. After our first collaboration was so warmly received it's given us some encouragement to continue as a working team. We had excellent brain storming with Carl that kick started the fire to create more and more furniture. We also visited Manchester Art Gallery recently and saw some amazing pieces of furniture and artefacts, planting lots of seeds of inspiration in both our brains (for the furniture and for my paintings.... oh yeah I paint, must remember that) Can't remember the designer of this chair though....oops!

Spent a bit of time in the print room testing out colours and pastes to print onto wood. I've also been experimenting with gold foil too, not sure it's quite as successful as the print paste. I think I love it on the MDF too.... so many options to think about. Handpainting onto the wood maybe?

The new venture in my life

An idea for christmas presents has led to an new venture in my life, I've joined creative forces with my boyfriend who is a furniture designer. We came up with this simple and stylish structure then screen printed an all-eyes-friendly design (so no Rudie Red boobies...YET)
Better photos and more tables, chairs, dressers, wardrobes, KITCHENS to come soon, we hope!

Big thanks to Art-el for exhibiting my work so beautifully, as ever. I'm really gutted I've not been able to make the show but the countdown to christmas has begun, I must try and squeeze a million things into 3 weeks.
